Benefits of Burdock Root

Native to Northern Asia and Europe, Burdock root is a vegetable that houses numerous potential health benefits. The root is usually very long and either a brown color or almost black. 

Burdock root has been used for centuries to heal several health conditions. It's most commonly used to treat digestive issues. Burdock root is available as a tea, supplement, and herbal tincture.

1. Skin Health 

For decades, burdock root has been used to remedy skin conditions, such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Burdock root has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which can help treat skin issues when applied to the skin topically. Researchers also suggest that burdock may help treat topical burns. 

In one study, researchers discovered that burdock extract contains important antioxidants which are able to inhibit enzymes that lead to wrinkling and extra pigmentation.

2. Cancer

Researchers suggest that burdock root may prevent high blood glucose which can be damaging and dangerous to the body.  

One study treated mice with diabetes for a month with 200 and 300 mg of burdock extract. Researchers discovered that after one month, the mice had increased levels of insulin. Furthermore, researchers also discovered positive changes in blood lipid profiles, including decreased levels of LDL and triglycerides or bad cholesterol and increased levels of HDL or good cholesterol

4. Sexual Behavior 

Burdock has been traditionally used to treat impotence and sterility for years.  

One study done on mice found that burdock root intensified sexual desire and behavior. It was also found to increase serum testosterone levels.  

However, more research is needed on the effects of burdock root on human sexual behavior.   

5. Prevents Infections 

Traditional healers have been using burdock root to fight and prevent infections for centuries.  

Burdock root has been used to fight a sore throat, the common cold, and various other illnesses.   

Studies have found that burdock root contains antibacterial qualities which is extremely useful for killing biofilms. Biofilms are large and sticky colonies of bacteria that grow throughout the body.
